Sam on the Farm: Where do baby cows come from?

Written by Sam Walton

The clocks are about to go back which ultimately means that winter is around the corner, but where has the year gone? Before we get into the depths of winter, our thoughts start to turn to next year and plans for 2020.

Cows are pregnant for nine months, and in order have another crop of calves in 2020, it’s time to get our girls at the farm pregnant again. Now without going into too much detail about the birds and the bees, there are two main ways to breed with cows, that’s either with a bull (natural service as we call it) or artificial insemination can be used.

It’s a fascinating topic and I find it so interesting every year to look at our breeding and how we can improve our herd of cows for the future.
